Judging by Mr. Mathis motion, it looks as if there is no way that this committee will recommend the extension of these roads, and thats a good thing. The motion and this attendance reflect an understanding that while we can always build roads, we arent building any more canyons.
It would be useful if we could use this occasion to think about how these kind of transportation issues can best be approached in the future. All over the city, people feel that nobody has a handle on the monumental growth we face. When we discuss roads, without also discussing transit and land use, there is a sense that our government is reacting to the building of our city rather than leading it. There is no grand plan that accommodates growth while saving and enhancing resources like this canyon. So the people here today feel that they are being singled out to bear the pain of growth, and they simply see no benefit to them.
This isnt the way or the place to build a road.
